It can be hard to make these lists when it is hard to determine which genre is the dominant one. My favourite syfy is Alien, but I am not sure if I favour it for its syfy or horror qualities.

Definitely. But admittedly the reason Alien isn't on the list is because i've never seen it. :/ I feel like it'll be too scary and i just can't do horror films. In other words, you'll never see a horror list made from me because other than The Shining (and that one scarred - yes i mean scarred and not scared - me a little!), i haven't seen any of them.

I do enjoy the films of Bong Joon-Ho that I have seen (i.e. - Snowpiercer and The Host), and I have, but have yet to watch, another of his films called Mother. Another Korean director to check out is Park Chan-wook. His Vengeance trilogy is simply outstanding, at times disturbing and beautiful all in the same breath. South Korea seems to be an overlooked gem in the realm of world cinema. Keep an eye on them!

It might be one of my favorite movies ever.

Haven't checked out #10 & #9 so I might watch 'em this week. I completely understand that it's hard to pinpoint what exactly is a sci-fi film. They borrow elements from so many genres & this makes it hard to categorize them in a single genre. Here's a few personal favorites not on the list that include sci-fi elements: Sunshine Alien Ex Machina A Trip To The Moon (silent film from 1902) The Fifth Element Mad Max 2 Looper Another Earth (pretty good drama) The Martian Westworld Terminator 2 Super 8 The Fifth Element and Terminator 2 stiff to not be in the list

Random side note: I just watched Carpenter's "Starman" and was pleasantly surprised.

District 9 guys - enough said...Unbelievably great sci-fi actioner
Others I'd recommend:
Inception Wall-E Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (Has elements of sci-fi) Donnie Darko Children of Men Moon Gravity Rise and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes Total Recall (Arnie one, not the shitty remake) Source Code Looper Sunshine I Origins Starship Troopers Super 8 Chronicle Primer Monsters

Others I'd recommend: Wall-E Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (Has elements of sci-fi) I seriously considered both of those, in fact. I think i'll do an animated films list eventually, and certainly Wall-E will be there because it's excellent. I didn't know what to do about ESOTSM. It's a world class film, and just like you said it has scifi-ish elements. Maybe one week when i'm about done with all the categories i can think of, i'll just do a "best of the rest" list with other awesome indie/weird/whatever else movies i haven't put in a thread yet.

Interesting list. I always recommend Dark City for any fans of the first Matrix, not quite sure I'd call it sci-fi though.
