I lived in the same city before moving to China, and they won best brewery in America one recent year. Also, they don’t distribute, so their outside presence is a big surprise. Owners are apparently metalheads because anytime I’m there the playlist is all Black Sabbath, Windhand, and a bunch of similar bands. Also, this brewery mastered IPAs, seriously. I’ve never had better ones. If you already went to this festival, I hope you tried some of their stuff. I miss this brewery so much. My favorite place, ever.

Also a beer related post here, the beer lord giveth, and the beer lord taketh. The Stone Brewery in Shanghai which only opened two years ago has closed its great beer doors. I knew when I came here that craft beer was not likel to have a bright future in Shanghai, contrary to the beliefs of many. I still remember my first time at Stone Shanghai, being one of about 14 or so customers. Stone is well known for their beers, but looking around there were mostly Chinese people eating the food and drinking FRUIT JUICE.
Oh well, maybe another great western brewery will come and brave the wilds here in its place. Probably will see that one fail too. Of course, the coronavirus was the last nail in the coffin this time, but Stone was not very well embraced here, sadly.

Pretty sure BrewDog bought them out to keep the space alive. Guess you can't change the nation's tastes!

Well, for all these other folk around me, that is... sigh Brewdog has a presence here, at least their stuff can be found on tap at the local World of Beer every time, usually in the happy hour section. I hadn’t had any Brewdog until I came to Shanghai. Had the Punk IPA and something else. Not bad, for sure. Sure doesn’t compare to Stone or Arizona Wilderness for me though. I’ll be getting more Brewdog in the future anyway. It’s also possible to find their stuff at the bigger grocery stores here.

Yeah BrewDog is everywhere. It's basically 'supermarket craft beer' for me now. If you want a proper craft beer then seek out the Arizona wilderness' of the World instead.
I didn't actually get to try their stuff at the fest in the end but I have had one of their DIPAs in the past. Was very nice.

I was at the grocery store in Kunshan last Friday and saw one remaining bottle of Peanut Butter Chocolate Milk Stout by Lost Coast. I've gotta be honest, I didn't even pay attention to the fact it was made by Lost Coast. I've been so starved for craft beer out here that I didn't care it was Lost Coast, a brewery whose beers I was always disappointed with back when I lived in AZ. However, I know much more about IPAs now than I did back when I tried those from Lost Coast. Their IPA, Hop Juice, sounded so good in theory. Was very disappointing, but I now suspect based on the taste that it had sat in the bottle way too long, and that it would have been solid if it was fresh.
Anyway, this Peanut Butter Chocolate Milk Stout was a successful beer in my eyes, as its taste completely matched its profile detailing on the bottle. I could taste the peanuts, the chocolate, raisins, and everything else it described. Was it everything I hoped it would be? Not really, but probably only because I can't shake the feeling that there will never be a better Peanut Butter stout variety than the one by Belching Beaver. That stuff is legendary status to me.

I used to kinda fetishize genuine Hefeweizens like those by Franziskaner, Paulaner, and the like, but actually all German beers are the most common beers around here in China! I used to love them, but nowadays all I crave is my favorite style, IPA, which is much less common in my area.

I had a stopover in Singapore on my way back to Europe, they had some good IPAs, surprisingly. I always thought except for Japan and South Korea no Asian Country really f*d with them.

I had a stopover in Singapore on my way back to Europe, they had some good IPAs, surprisingly. I always thought except for Japan and South Korea no Asian Country really f*d with them. Well from an American perspective, for the longest time we had shitty beer, like really shitty beer, like my parents all talk about a time before Coors distributed to the East Coast where Coors was considered something of a foreign delicacy. Now Coors is just another shitty domestic beer. Along those same lines German beer was this new thing that tasted great and wasn't Budweiser, it's easy to see how the appeal originated. I like German beer, I've had German beer at a bar in Germany and enjoyed it (technically I was only in Germany for a layover and never left the airport bar) but still, I don't think it belongs on a pedestal. On the other side of the fence in the last 20 years America has really improved it's beer game, and what's really cool is it all happened on a regional level. There are some "crafts" like Breckenridge or Stone that you can get anywhere in the country, but the beer scene in Cleveland is totally different than say Tampa or Phoenix, it's really cool.
