Just finished the second season and while I generally loved the first season, there was a huge dropoff in originality. Instead of casting Samwise, Brett Gelman, & Paul Reiser with the renewal budget increases, they should have hired additional writers to make the second season more about The Upside Down and less about the 1980s Middle & High School Experience. The Billy character in general, but specifically giving him screen time in the finale to flirt with Mike's mom, was a terrible decision. We didn't need more characters, we needed more exploration of what made this show interesting: the Upside down.
The descent into viral pathology, unnecessary comic relief, & over-reliance on the "Demo-dogs" really was a huge step down.
God I really hope they clean this up before it completely jumps the shark!
