I'm going to try and ensure I catchup with a few classics next year so I'll spend today putting a list together for the 20 I want to watch and get them up on Letterboxd (and here). Feel free to join in and share

So far my list is coming on pretty slowly. I've literally got these 3 on the list and 2 of them are from the same director:
Blue Velvet Mulholland Drive Braveheart

I'm down for this. I'd have to do some serious thinking, though, because I can't think of any off of the top of my head.

Start with the latest version of AFI's 100 films of all time list and work your way through that. That's what I've been doing.

Start with the latest version of AFI's 100 films of all time list and work your way through that. That's what I've been doing. I just had a look at this - i've seen 41 of the films on that list. The difficulty is that most of those "classics" are films for cinema purists and don't always make great entertainment for the average moviegoer. There's also some of these 60's films which I'm sure are great but I just have no interest in sitting through them (The likes of Amadeus, Doctor Zhivago, West Side Story, etc). My list has grown slightly: 1) Mulholland Drive 2) Blue Velvet 3) Braveheart 4) The Fifth Element 5) The Princess Bride 6) The Jerk 7) The Running Man 8) Cobra 9) Galaxy Quest 10) Death Note 11) Roadhouse

This is a great idea, I'm fully on board. Will start building my list this week. There's some critically acclaimed films by the likes of Tarkovsky and Ozu that I really need to see. And then some random ones like Mulan lol. I always like using the Letterboxd database to find films: letterboxd.com/films/You can sort by popularity and average rating and break it down by decades too.

Rule of thumb: if it's on the Criterion Collection, one should generally watch it.

its kinda hard to whittle down; I guess some films one takes for granted everyone has seen, but who am I to judge? It all depends on how cinematically open minded you want to be I guess, and that isn't a knock on you Ghosty at all.

If I might make a small suggestion? Why don't you start at the 1940's and pick 3 films per decade. You can mix and match it however you like, don't neglect international cinema ( Ghosty +1,000,000 for having Seven Samurai on your list, my personal #1 film of all time) and just have fun and not overthink things too much. Sure you'll make it to the 2000's with 21 films, but whose counting? Growing up, I watched waaaay more classic films than I did modern (parents influence ), so I'm down with debating and hashing films out if you didn't quite understand it and I've seen it before, natch.

Some proper bangers in there. I've seen 19 of them. Wouldn't drop any.

Some proper bangers in there. I've seen 19 of them. Wouldn't drop any. I guess it depends on which of them can be considered classics or not. Like Thief has been on my list of stuff to watch for a few years, but it probably isn't a classic. I'm iffy on The Goonies because I didn't watch it as a kid and I think nostalgia is a big reason for why people like it. I'm also sort of loath to watch Fight Club given how neckbeardy its online following is and I didn't really like the book lol. Also The Mask is questionable. I might just leave it at 25 unless everyone else is only doing 20.
