Hate Eternal: This band is not new to the scene. Erik Rutan is the legendary guitarist and vocalist who is the mastermind of this project. Formed this band at the end of his two album stint in Morbid Angel. Perhaps this band is too extreme for many, and too drum heavy for most, but Erik Rutan, to quote an article I read, I believe is truly one of the most dependable musicians in death metal. This dude is almost 50 years old, and has not lost a bit of power and ferocity in his playing and writing. This new album, Upon Desolate Sands, is one of few things this year that has received multiple play throughs from me so far this year. Not for everyone, but give it a try! This track has a wonderful melodic solo just after the 4 minute mark, which highlights Erik as a very musical guitarist.

As i said before, i don't much like a lot of "pure" death metal, but i've recently gotten into Cryptopsy, so that's good to start with i think. We'll see if it leads to more. Not like i need MORE bands to seek out...

Not like i need MORE bands to seek out... Which Cryptopsy album(s) do you like so far? And what draws you into their sound? Depending on which album, I could imagine giving you some suggestions you may enjoy. If you like their later period, for example, I’d say to go check out the latest album by Aborted. Might be up your alley.

Well it's hard to argue with None So Vile, pretty much a seminal metal album. But yes, my tastes do draw me to more of the recent stuff -- except their brief flirtation with deathcore, but that's probably symptomatic of the constantly changing lineup.

None So Vile is an album that is worshipped, but I personally never got too into it. Well, I feel curious if you are into or have ever checked out Morbid Angel. Not the latest two albums, because those were not very good, but have you ever listened to Altars of Madness or Domination? Those two albums represent very different sounds in their discography, and yet I love it all. Easily one of my favorite death metal bands of all time, despite the last two albums being stinkers.

Obliteration: This Norwegian death metal band takes the gold for me this year as my favorite death metal album of 2018, which says a lot considering that this year was packed with some of the greatest death metal releases in a while! This band wears their Autopsy influences on their sleeves, and yet produce something totally different. Great stuff, get into it!

Azarath: Old school death metal revival ain’t your thing? Azarath have got your back! Old school death metal clones and tribute acts are flooding the death metal market, but bands like Azarath are pushing the limits with their modern death metal sound. This band sounds similar to mid-era Behemoth. Well, they do share a common member with Behemoth: Inferno on drums. That master blaster really shines on his material with Azarath. I’m hoping for a new album soon, but in the meantime, check out material from their 2017 album, which was totally badass.

Necrovorous: Death metal from Greece, a country which has proven a lot lately that it excels in all metal styles. This band will appeal to fans of most of the Dark Descent roster, a bit of Swedish death influence, a bit of Autopsy worship, a truly familiar sound. If it's so familiar, I must be posting it for a reason. That's because these guys were seriously overlooked, and this is a real death metal gem of an album within the old school death metal tradition.

Ascended Dead: Found this band after Unlearner shared that badass thrash metal demo from the band Menacer that no longer exists by searching members of Menacer on Metalarchives to see what they do now. The coolest find out of that search was easily the bass player of Menacer’s current death metal band, Ascended Dead. The riffs in this thing are awesome. Drumming is often some next level shit, not surprising since this drummer also played in Ghoulgotha and also plays for Funebrarum. This band is awesome. Can’t wait to see more from them. The middle of this song just goes nuts. Check it out.

Been a while since I’ve posted some Death metal. Truth is, this year hasn’t brought many interesting bands in the genre to my attention yet. Finally found something cool though!
Horrisonous: A death/doom band from Australia that doesn’t sound completely familiar and unnecessary. In fact, there is quite an original flavor to some of their songs, although of course at this point cavernous death/doom is not new territory by any means. The band does not do fast, but they do mid-paced sometimes and also slow. What is cool is the direction they go with their doom leads and some melodic direction that is not like Tomb Mold, Outer Heaven, Hooded Menace, or other front runners in the death/doom scene. I’ll be following this band for a while.
