Hahaha, okay, so black metal just ain’t popular. I don’t blame you guys. I really don’t like it either. But I do like this Enslaved album a lot actually! It’s quite an experience. Hatebreed. Oh damn, that’s a quite a trip for me. I liked Hatebreed a lot for a while and this song was definitely way up there for me as well. I’m not a Hatebreed purist and I won’t claim to know what is their best era or anythiung, but I like this song a lot too. Actually, I am beginning to open up a bit again and not just only listen to pure metal anymore. I still don’t care for hardcore that much, but I can appreciate a good hardcore song or two. Hatebreed really got heavy. And then there was that band Kingdom of Sorrow that Jamey Jasta formed which had like, maybe one or two good songs, but my god were they heavy as fuck! Jamey Jasta and crew really did change the face of hardcore though, without a doubt. Cool stuff. Okay, no more black metal! Got it! Here’s another old band (from the late 70’s!) with an old release! This was released in 1989 if my memory is correct. Running Wild are from Germany and have always straddled the line between power metal and good ole’ traditional heavy metal. They’re legendary for good reason: They write excellent, catchy songs with nice riffs, and a wonderful vocalist. Also, these guys sometimes get labeled as “Pirate metal” or some stupid shit due to their pirate themed songs, but anyway, excellent band. I have to share!

I'll check this out later, i've never heard of em actually, so I can't comment lol. Black Metal is one of my all time favorite genres, so i'm always down to talk about it. I saw Enslaved once and I got bored. Anyways I really just wanna talk about Bolt Thrower

I seriously doubt most people on here give a shit about Bolt Thrower, so I’m gonna take that one right now. Lol
Bolt Thrower have not made a bad album. It’s pretty impressive when even a mainstream youtube top 10 lists video acknowledges a band like Bolt Thrower for such a distinction. Their lead work, riffs, and sense of groove is unmistakable. Their evolution from a grindcore band to a death metal band is something that interests me a bit. But anyway, many people seem to be fascinated with this album War Master, Realm of Chaos, and For Victory. My personal favorite is For Victory, but all are solid. I also love the soloing on these albums, very wild, maybe inspired a bit from Slayer. Bolt Thrower are always a good discussion topic.
Okay, for my next one, I’m going with something new. Rhythm of Fear are a thrash/crossover band. I’ve only listened to their 2019 release, but after a few listens I plan to go check their other stuff. I picked the song “Holy Venom,” which is very heavy and groovy. Not sure how accurate my personal description of their sound is, but I would say they sound like if Pantera rose from the ashes and decided to play Power Trip songs with a slight Obituary twist here and there.

That was a good track; I like the riffing in the first section where it’s more low and methodical, almost like its marching. Good stuff. For my pick, I’m going with a track that ghostchant threw into the listening section a couple of days ago, and I’ve been going back to it off and on since then. I really like how the drums are bouncy and help fill the groove really well.

If I could step into a time machine with that track and listen to it in 2008, this would have been my jam a few months. Haha. tao, you highlighted the drums, and that was also something that stuck with me while listening to the track. I'd say the drums were my favorite part of the song. Next would be the vocals, because I could easily understand what he said while keeping the harsh vocals on. Not my jam in the year 2019, but not bad at all. I'm feeling some Strapping Young Lad right now, especially with Devin Townsend being pretty big in recent music releases with his latest solo album, Empath, which is a big departure from his work with Strapping Young Lad. SYL was a big act for industrial metal, and took it in directions it hadn't gone before, and for me is the only real industrial metal band worth your time. Fear Factory were fine, but didn't encompass so many different rich sound worlds as SYL. Hard to choose a song, but I'm in love with the album, Alien, and I'll share the song, "Love?," which is one of the groovier numbers.

I love that song! SYL is one of those bands that released two albums just at the right time for me. I never listened to anything before or after those two records -- Strapping Young Lad and Alien -- some while there are a couple clunky tracks, there are also some absolutely awesome ones that i totally still rock today. I felt like SYL was a balls-out metal album (they literally, in the CD book, have sections of lyrics that are IN CAPS and they explicitly tell you to memorize those parts and scream them at the concerts) but that Alien was a much more interesting record, with several really intricate and clever songs just like the one you posted. They way he's able to build the songs to sonic crescendos, without getting repetitive or just loud, i always appreciate.
I've listened to other stuff from Devin Townsend, and i really respect his uniqueness and longevity in metal music, but really none of it i care much for except those two records. Also, his vocals are certainly an acquired taste. You definitely made me queue up both of these for listening in the very near future again though.
Here's a totally unknown band i still just adore. Something mathy, jazzy, progressive, and fucking heavy, this is the first track of Exotic Animal Petting Zoo's debut album, I Have Made My Bed in Darkness, which came out in 2008. They only released one more record after this, but this one is their best. Some clear influence from Between the Buried and Me, but in a way even more scattered like Mr. Bungle or other wacky bands. Still, not afraid to slow down for a dreamy interlude, then collapse for a brutal breakdown. Love love it.

Exotic Animal Petting Zoo. I expected to hate that, if I'm being quite honest. Perhaps I would have a few months back when I wasn't listening to just about every kind of metal under the sun. These days I listen to so much variety. I can only echo much of what you said, v9733xa. There is so much going on in that song, and it seems rewarding across multiple listens. I definitely thought of BTBAM a bit, and I even actually found a small element of Dance Gavin Dance's later sound in it, but only barely. At the end of the song, I felt the song had taken me on quite a trip, and was cool with replaying it. That's cool. Hmm...3 Inches of Blood. Anyone listened to this before? Let's cue them up. They were polarizing in some way because they did this kind of 80's heavy metal sound, but the vocals are harsh and metalcore-ish in a way from one guy, while another guy does a high pitched heavy metal thing. It is truly one of my favorite albums of all time, and people who don't like trad heavy metal shouldn't have any reason to dislike this, because it has a very different energy from most trad heavy metal. Give it a try.

Cool thread...I’m going to miss you. You were good times. v9733xa got me to revisit some of my metalcore/post-hardcore roots and reopen my pallate. tao introduced me especially to cool Asian music, some of which I knew and others I definitely didn’t but enjoyed. clazza posted a really cool jam band whose terrifically entertaining music video was laced with all kinds of drugs for entertainment that both made me giggle and horrified my neighbor. tucker also popped in to post a cool Bolt Thrower album that should be enjoyed at least twice through each year. I may be missing some people, but the memories I had in this thread will stay with me. You’ve been great, cool thread. Rest In Pieces

Give it a try. Dang, stringypoo, going all drama queen to get this thread back lolol. That 3 Inches Of Blood track is good from an instrumental standpoint, but I much preferred the uncleans over the cleans. Who knew King Diamond could be angsty like that? Not a bad choice, but not something I’d normally listen to often, mainly because of the clean vocals. Guitar solo fucking rips tho. For my choice, I’m going to go with a track off of my #1 favorite album of all time; this would be a good track (in my opinion) for those who’re unfamiliar with the band, as it shows many of the facets that make up their whole. The title of this song translates to “guilt”, and the lyrics deal largely around that topic, in one way or another, using footage and imagery from the atomic bombings, along with artists’ renditions of the ensuing aftermath to really bring the point home. It’s a haunting yet mesmerizing track.

It lives!!!!! Glad you found some redeeming qualities in 3 Inches of Blood, tao! I can recognize a common thread here being that mostly my tastes in metal leave people in the dark because the vocals are a bit of a hang-up. I totally get it. I mostly focus my listening energy on the quality of the riffs, which probably explains my tastes a bit. Now I also have adapted to these vocal approaches. However, 3 Inches of Blood is a very old love of mine. Dir En Grey: Awesome track, really. Even given my somewhat bias against most metal from Japan (hard to explain it well, but I tend to find it a turnoff in many cases with a few exceptions), this does make me want to check this album of Dir En Grey, also helpful knowing it's your favorite album. I'll surely make a plan to find and listen to it all soon. Their vocalist is especially a point of interest to me, as I can definitely see why many suggest that he is not human. He has incredible vocal control, much like my favorite singer, also from Japan, surprisingly. If there is something here I don't care for, it's just the style of the riffs isn't always my tastes. But then again, there were plenty of good riffs too. Okay, something with solid vocals from me this time. I posted Strapping Young Lad before, but this is Devin Townsend's other entity, Devin Townsend Project. This is really a nicely made music video. And, I want to add that this is a recent song find for me, but I've now watched this video several times and it always gives me goosebumps 2/3 the way into it, which is not something I experience with most music at all. Devin really has a wonderful, expansive way of writing and performing music that is just so wonderful when you let yourself submerge into it.

Yep that was definitely as epic as humanly possible. Maybe a little too epic. Good playing though and I liked a lot of the melodies and vocals.
Time for an absolute classic. I've been hammering this all week.

I tried to resist answering to that post, since I tend to post a lot in this thread and then I often kill it for a good amount of time, but damn it I can't resist! clazza, this post is clear reasoning for why I wish you posted in here more! That was probably my favorite song posted in this thread so far. Haha! The band are huge but I had never listened to them before. I think I listened to this track at least 8 times since you posted it. So thanks for that. Good stuff. I love that guitar lick they have in that song that comes in here and there. Kinda quirky, groovy, and just fun. Now excuse me while I listen to the song again... For my next one, I'm going oldies too. 1980 was Angel Witch's biggest moment, I would say. Great song, some punky elements, but ultimately a real stunner for the NWOBHM scene. Why this band has fallen into somewhat more obscure status today is the oddest thing to me.

That was a fun little jaunt, as it had good energy and solid instrumentality. On the downside, it felt like a track you’d find on a “guitar rock” compilation or something along those lines, as it felt very... basic. If they stretched it out 2 more minutes and thrown in an epic solo, then we’re talking... For my pick, let’s stay in 1980, shall we? I discovered the Talking Heads 2-3 years ago when I was trying to work my way through as many OG punk/post-punk bands as I could find, including X, Echo and the Bunnymen, Blondie, Siouxsie and the Banshees and The Clash et al. Nowadays I really enjoy their more cerebral brand of post-punk that they ply, and this is off probably my favorite album from them, “Remain In Light”; still need to find this sucker on (reasonably priced!) vinyl:

Yes that's a song I've heard my whole life. I've never been a huge fan of talking heads but they do have a good amount of belting tunes.
Here is one of the first songs I can ever remember hearing.
