To be honest, it took me the better part of a day to write my Letterboxd review, and while I was writing I was also trying to think of questions/observations to ask, and I couldn't come up with anything. You have any questions or observations you wanted to raise?

I know this is directed more to you, but it's not meant to put you on the spot or anything; for you, is there a way to passively watch, or is this aspect you disagree with too ingrained? I mean, when I watch an anime I don't objectify a female character, even if their voice hits a higher register, and I judge on story; I do understand that really the vocal tone and timbre that one encounters overwhelmingly in anime has kind of been historically elevated to the term "Schtick", so in a way it'd be virtually impossible to eradicate within the genre, and I can see where you're coming from and I empathize, but I guess I'm just wondering if there's a happy medium that could be reached?
I'm glad you've made the effort and I'd completely understand if you never watched another anime as long as you live, but I just wonder...

Probably not. It's that annoying. If there were some possible reason for it to exist, then sure. But there isn't, other than the chauvinistic culture of Japan demeaning woman to sexy playthings and little girls to be possessed and tossed away. They don't talk that way in non-animated movies, so why do they do it in cartoons?
The only time I would be okay with it if, ya know, if were actual children in the movie. Like another one of those Miyazaki movies that are a little more geared to kids, obviously that's fine. But for a woman who's 21 to be drawn and voiced like she's 12-going-on-9... yeah it'll never be alright.

I think the pedo voyeurism you talk about has more to do with Japanese culture than you might realise. When I was in Japan last April I noticed they have Women-Only carriages on the tube, and when I asked my friend who lives there now about it he explained that there's a lot of men in Japan who fondle schoolgirls on the tube, or try to get upskirt photos on their mobiles. I actually witnessed a guy intentionally dropping his headphones between the legs of a girl so he could get a quick snap of her panties, so this shit does still exist now and it is disturbing and it gives you a lens on the thought process from a (not all) Japanese male perspective.
As for the film itself, I like that it wasn't your typical overly intoxicating visual mindfuck that I expect when I watch anime and it actually felt like something that has influenced Western cinema since it was made, but I think I'd have loved it more if I'd seen it back in the 90's. The animation isn't as great as the likes of Your Name or anything I've seen over the past 10 years, but I guess that's to be expected when you're watching something that is 20+ years old.

Apologies for my late viewing of this movie. I was stuck in Belgium during the deadline, and my work laptop couldn't properly play the copy I had. I'd been meaning to watch it forever, but the subject matter kept me from actually doing it. Definitely not an easy watch. I really enjoyed the psychological thriller aspect of the story, it was very well executed. It made me even question my grasp on reality myself. Def ahead of its time, and probably the reason why it's been dubbed 'acclaimed'. I do agree with some of you here that some of the main characters could've been fleshed out a bit more. 3.5/5 |
