I'm not a panicked person at all, and for once it's great to live alone in a single home. But worries are for others. I can't help but think of things I haven't seen anyone talk about. Yes, sure, the health issues are number one, especially for the elderly. But consider all the far-reaching ramifications of closing down so much our social activity, for weeks, or months.
Like, sports. Sure, LeBron James is gonna be fine. But what about the hot dog vendor? The parking lot attendant? The sports journalist? What does ESPN talk about in a week from now? Will they fire half their staff? Will all the sports reporters be laid off in a month?
Music. ALL of your favorite bands cannot survive if the can't play live shows. Profit margins for album/song sales are effectively zero because of thieves like us, who at least rationalize it by going to lots of concerts and buying merch there. What now? That hardcore band who you assume is doing fine because they'e put out 5 records in the last 8 years in fact are probably making no money at all, and without touring... well how long can they exist?
Without paid leave, workers at places like movie theatres and restaurants could be completely fucked, especially the young ones working through college to help pay for their $25,000/year school. Now what? Do they not make their next tuition payment?
Stuff like that keeps me up. I'm fine, but I can't help but think about everyone who won't be, real soon.

As of today The Netherlands will be in a complete lockdown. We were sitting in a restaurant and they stopped everything and asked us to leave. Schools, restaurants, movie theaters etc are now closed until april 6th.
I work in a hotel and hotels remain open but with stricter rules. No breakfest or partial breakfast will be served. Occupancy in my hotel is very low atm so we are probably going to cancel the remaining bookings.
I was planning to go to a festival next month (april 11th) but I see it getting canceled. Parkway Drive & Lamb of God already cancelled their tours and we are just waiting to hear from them to cancel the event entirely

Guardian have just announced its expected to be around till spring 2021 and 80% of the population will get it Thoughts? Well, that would absolutely wreak havoc on the economy. I personally don’t imagine it lasting that long, but it’s definitely not something to rule out either. Apparently some strains of the Coronavirus can die out with the change of season/temperatures, but I believe we still don’t know if this particular strain is one of those or not. If this is a strain that isn’t impacted by the season, I guess it really comes down to how each country handles it. Here in China, we’ve got a decent amount of control over it, but we’ve also had it since end of January. Extreme measures were taken here quite quickly once word finally got out. As a result, it’s looking like sometime in April it’s very possible for people here to resume a normal life without fear of the virus in their area. But I expect there will still be patients in hospitals working on recovery. I don’t work in the medical field or anything, just looking at the route to recovery here and it’s getting better daily on our end.

Well, I've been quarantined in a hotel here in Xi'an. We came back from Belgium on the 11th. When we got to our compound, we were told to quarantine ourselves for 14 days in our appartment. Then yesterday evening we received the call that we had to go to a hotel for quarantine because Belgium had just been labeled an 'infected area'. I totally understand the situation but was poorly handled by the local authorities in our case. Very poor communication and bad attitude at the local level (neighbourhood committee) here. Hardly any information given, and when asked for more clarification, they threatened to call the cops... The committee also made a bunch of promises and declarations that later turned out to be false (free hotel, that we wouldn't be separated, etc.). We traveled together with my Belgian coworker and his family. They live in another district, and have yet to be quarantined in a hotel. I can only deduct that every district is interpreting the law differently. For their sake, I hope that they don't need to be quarantined and separated since they have a 2-year old daughter. Hmm, yeah, I imagine it is handled differently in different areas, especially based on the numbers of infected in each area. I know when I finally have to go back to Kunshan from Shanghai for work when the school finally reopens, I’m supposed to do 14 days quarantine inside my Kunshan apartment because I’m coming from a more infected area. Who knows what situation will greet me when I arrive there... not really looking forward to it. I was given trouble yesterday upon reentering the family apartment, and not sure why. I showed them my QR code thing from Alipay with green status, and they were still not content and tried to get me to do a bunch more stuff and my wife’s dad also didn’t understand and he just yelled at them and told me to just go back to the house. Do you have to pay for this hotel? I’m assuming you do... You assume correctly. Since I'm a foreign national, I have to pay for the hotel as well as the nucleid acid test. Doesn't matter if you live and work and pay taxes here. My gf's stay is free, luckily, otherwise that would've been a small financial disaster haha. I'm going to try to have my company reimburse the bill though.

Our school is extending words of reason, but it’s yet to be seen if they will truly “reimburse teachers for their return flights” as I know that’s going to be expensive and they’re going to want to weasel out of that. Luckily for me I never left China. And probably I still have to do 14 days isolation when I return to Kunshan, but I’m kinda looking forward to that. Gives me a lot of alone time to get a lot of things done that I’m having trouble accomplishing here in the family home. Haha

Here in Poland they started letting some people go or reduced their salaries by X%. It's looking pretty grim. The economical consequences are going to be massive.

South Korea tested 66,000 people in the first week. Since February, the U.S. has tested 7,000. This is going down in history as one of the worst crisis management responses in American history. That's impossible. Donald Trump knows more about literally everything ever than anybody ever.................

I'm sick and tired of this thread being a place of unknown and fear and everything that's closing down. I think it's high time we inserted some positive things into it. I mentioned it in the shout box but who's up for TDM game night?! My first thought was Cards Against Humanity has online versions. Or I'm sure there is other group games we could play as well. I know I've played a D&D campaign on my computer before, but that requires someone volunteering to DM, which I'd be terrible at. Also open to many more suggestions.
Yeah Coronavirus sucks, but maybe we can use this as a chance to get some chuckles in and get to know each other a little bit better?! Maybe this is a terrible idea and you all secretly hate me lol. The way I see it is if we're all stuck in the house at the same time with the internet, let's make the fucking most of it.

If this was all happening four years ago, before I was married, had a kid, and moved to the opposite side of the world, I’d totally be down! Unfortunately I’m generally quite tied down, so I’m out. Cool idea though. I can imagine this taking off the ground with at least a few of us.
