I'm fairly new to anime. I've watched all of Once Punch man and Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood. they were pretty awesome. My girlfriend started showing me a bit of Fairy Tale and that was alright. But what are good Animes to get into as someone who doesn't know what to look for. I feel like I want to like it but sometimes i can't get over how over the top some of it is. I play a lot of JRPGs so i thought I'd branch off into some Anime.
Any ways, what are some recommendations?

Next on my list after Tokyo Ghoul. Do you know if Sword Art Online fits my brief? I'd say Sword Art Online is a lil bit iffy then. I liked the idea and the anime overall(mostly just the first half), but it isn't a strong story based one. Death Parade is amazing and I'd put Erased in a close second. If you want a nice story and an interesting show those are definitely a must watch. Shinsekai Yori and Re:Zero are both really good too. I'd say Re:Zero is in my top 5 easily. Thank you sirs. That'll probably keep me busy for the next few months. I'll let you know what I think!

Recently finished: The Disastrous Life of Saiki K Saga of Tanya the Evil.
Highly recommend both.
Some other recommendations: Overlord Fate Zero From the New World My Bride is a Mermaid

Just finished Magical Witch Punie-chan. Really weird and funny. I haven't seen anything like this for a good while now.

I'm kinda a pleb when it comes to anime, I've only ever watched Kill la Kill and Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann. They're both great though. If anyone knows anything similar to those, I'm open to recommendations.

Well, second season of Attack on Titan was kinda disappointing...
On the bright side, My Hero Academia has been great so far!

You might find some luck here (same studio – well those two are from different studios but the people behind TTGL left Gainax to start Trigger): myanimelist.net/anime/producer/803/TriggerYou can also try watching FLCL. But my recommendation is to broaden and try something different since it will be hard to find many like them.

Finished Code Geass: Akito the Exiled. Absolute rubbish. 3D CGI mechs. Only a very minor cameo from the original cast. Boring in general. No Cheese-kun. Waste of time.

I just started watching One Punch Man and Mob Psycho 100, and they're both pretty great.

As cliche as it is, Cowboy Bebop is probably one of the best "gateway" anime you can start off with; seeing as you said that you play JRPG's, you could check out Sword Art Online. You could also check out Re:Zero, that was a good show.

If you just watch the first season of SAO, it's really good, especially with how they go about character progression. Good story you could probably check out Kids On The Slope or My Love Story. Don't judge on that last one; heard lots of good things about it and checked it out, and ended up mildly surprised at how good it actually was.

It's probably already been said but Gantz!! I apologize, but I have to strenuously disagree with you here. Never been let down so hard by an original ending to an anime. I actually prefer how they ended the live action adaptations over how the anime ended. I understand that the manga wasn't finished when they did the anime and adaptations, but daaaaaaang man. Props to the anime for being a bit more faithful to the manga than the adaptations, even if "more faithful" means more nudity, sex and violence.

I didn't mind that it wasn't as big and open like the first season, and I thought overall that it was pretty strong. 100% agree with you though about My Hero Academia!
