edit: I hope this is in the right section,
my girlfriend and some friends think its really weird that I listen to music while I read. I explain that it builds atmosphere but no one gets it.
wondering if some of you do this.
post things you listen to while you read so I can do the same.
science fiction books I usually listen to this
fantasy books I usually listen to this
and then anything else is usually Mogwai or Explosions

I can't read without listening to music, in fact, or maybe having some droning channel on TV in the background.
Here is my all-time classic i used to use for homework in college 15 goddamn years ago.
If you haven't listened to DJ Shadow before, this album changed my life. This is track 2.
I also suggest, if you prefer actual instruments, Pelican.
And if you can handle jazz, you can't beat the legends Miles Davis or Dave Brubeck, in two of the greatest albums of all time, Kind of Blue and Time Out.

I usually listen to non-vocal music whilst reading, as vocals pull my attention away from my book and create a conflict of interest. Jazz, classical music and/or soundtracks are my usual go to.

I never listen to music while reading. It is just too distracting because the music also channels some thoughts in me and my mind starts to wander, so I cannot focus on the book then.

I use to get like this too until I found the right music for the right books. but then again I now play video games and watch tv at the same time and I also listen to hardcore music while I write.

I don't know much else out there, so this is solid this one is my favorite.

Im also really interested in where to start with jazz.

Here's a couple other selections that might whet your interest: And with jazz, you must start with the all time greats:

when it comes to hip hop-ish instrumentals I usually stick with MF DOOM or GREAF. I don't know much else out there, so this is solid DOOM is way too hyperactive to me. I love instrumental hiphop. Can highly recommend: J Dilla Pete Rock Elaquent Madlib (watch out for his jazz records, anything else is again too active) Mike Slott Apollo Brown Cupp Cave Kariem Riggins Dibia$e Teebs I also love to read with liquid and minimally styled drum and bass. Check out Calibre, dBridge, Instra:Mental, Consequence and the Mosaic Vol 2 comp for that.

I like listening to ambient sounds while I read, I kind of use them like a white noise machine just to help me focus. I started out with Rainy Mood: rainymood.com/I've since got an app called White Noise which has a huge library of ambient sounds. There's one I really like which is the sound of the sleep room on the International Space Station.
