So my 48 day old son went into the children’s hospital the other day for his 40-day check, which is only offered once a week, so he was just a little over 40 days, just like many others who were there. The funny realization was that my son was by far the biggest baby there. Yes, we’re talking China, but seriously for those who haven’t been there, not all Asians are small. I’m smaller than most people around me, and my wife isn’t tall or anything either. So when we go and see that our son is bigger (mostly quite a bit longer, not fatter) than all the other babies, it was a really funny feeling. I was never the big kid in the bunch at any point in time. Now I’m wondering if we acquired a giant. Hahaha
Also, I support the closing of shoutbox, but why was the random thoughts thread closed? I feel this is just the same thread with different wording.

When I visited Japan I got a kick out of being on the taller side (I'm 5ft 8). Average height in the UK is 5ft 9 whereas in Japan it's 5ft 7. It's amazing how much difference the slight variation in average makes.

I feel this is just the same thread with different wording. I'm assuming it's so people know this thread serves the same purpose as the chat box. The random thoughts thread felt a little like it was suggesting all conversation had to be 'random' whereas this can be more focused conversation. Personally I think it's a good move to close the shoutbox and try to get people posting more. The interface of forums in general feels a little archaic and clunky compared to modern platforms like Twitter and Reddit, but I think they are much better for generating good quality discussion. I was a little concerned with what Reptar said about not renewing the domain or seeing the point in keeping this place running. Even if we don't all post regularly, a lot of us really value this place and don't want to lose it. I'd hope we'd be consulted before anything like that happened. And I'm sure we can donate if running costs are any issue.

In China so far, I’ve experienced the sensation of being taller than other adults much more often than I did in the US. But there are also quite a lot of tall people here too, mostly the youth, which seem to be growing into a Chinese generation of giants. Yao Mings are everywhere here! Hahaha! Okay, not Yao Ming tall, but tall. Perhaps there is something to the Asian height stereotype, but it definitely isn’t to be applied to the whole.

I guess the improving economy in China will increase the average height? I read that North Koreans are on average three inches shorter than those in the South, and that lot of it comes down to diet and nutrition. It's not just that certain ethnic groups are naturally shorter due to genetics.

One thing I recall was that the landscape of North Korea was not great for growing many healthy vegetables and things, but it is great for potatoes, which are a big part of the North Korean diet. They’re starchin’ it up up there. Here in China, the vegetables are just insane with regards to their endless varieties and flavors. I’m in love with what is considered healthy food here. Back home, I never ate so healthy. If I had grown up with this diet, I probably would have been taller. I also would have probably grown bigger if I had breastfed as a kid, but apparently there was none produced. My kid is getting lots of it, and he’s a giant. Hahaha

Such children. I’m 6’ 2”. How's the weather up there? Do you play basketball? fairly decent once you clean the eagles out of your hair. I never was terribly keen about playing basketball, I was always playing softball and American style football. It's funny though, because growing up all I wanted was to be taller than my older brother so that I could stand a chance playing 1 v. 1 in basketball in the alley behind my house. Nowadays, I'm the tallest one in my family.

Was kinda bummed to see the shoutbox shut down, but I can't argue with the results of it generating a lot of conversation elsewhere. Hope this trend keeps up.

My wife’s been out of town all weekend so I’ve consistently went to bed drunk the past two nights.
