I work in a doctor's office as most of you know, so today was a heck of a Monday.
Oddly, Delaware is one of the few states without a coronavirus case, but literally every state surrounding us has them. Our providers basically said "no, certainly people in Delaware have the illness, but don't know it or haven't been tested," as some have very mild symptoms and the testing kits are of course woefully under the number required. So we're under the assumption that we will have a patient walk through our doors with COVID-19 and we won't be able to know that they do.
Our office decided to put a staff member at the door to effectively screen every person that walks in -- patient, relative, caretaker, anyone -- for respiratory issues, and if they have the slightest cough they are required to wear or a mask or they must leave. We're just one independent office with 6 providers, but we see like 115 patients a day, so it's a lot. And being an "internal medicine" clinic, we obviously see tons of sick people, and more pertinently patients with lots of serious chronic illnesses or immuno-compromised conditions. Additionally, the average age of our patients is probably 65 to 70.
So, sure, I'm not worried for myself. I work in the basement, and I'm a healthy (fat) guy. I'll be fine. But facilities like ours -- and notably nursing homes in particular, like in Washington -- are severely threatened by something that can really do some damage to the elderly.

That’s the thing. Many people are looking at it like it’s no worse than a cold, and they mentality is creating potentially more dangerous outcomes. I don’t know how to change the fact some people view this virus that way. Especially my fellow Americans. They still support our president despite all the shit he did and does, and when he goes out to the podium and tells the American people that there are fewer cases than actuality in the US, it’s misinformation that an unfortunately high number of people swallow as fact. How do I know this? My whole family back home minus my parents are all Trump diehards, who also happen to be deeply religious. Trump “can’t do wrong because he’s a man of God” kind of mentality... prevents people from seeing the truth, and in the case of this virus it might unnecessarily cost a lot of lives. Glad I’m not there right now actually. I’d be more scared there. I have a more lax attitude about it and it's not about me being tough or bulletproof it's just math. Even in Wuhan it's only been contracted by about 5% of the population and has a mortality rate around 3%. Sure maybe it's easier to have that lax attitude in a part of the country that isn't in panic. But the way I see it more people are going to die this year from opioid overdoses than corona. Maybe I'm wrong, either way I can't wait for this thing to pass. Then we just get to sit back and wonder about all the idiots who aren't going to have their kids vaccinated for this. More people have been stabbed in London this year than they've died from this

Yeah, that's incredibly dangerous stuff.
Trump has backed off a bit, when he's feeling disciplined, but occasionally he will still throw out the "but the flu kills 30,000 people a year" stat he loves, which undercuts the seriousness of COVID-19. THEY ARE NOT THE SAME THING. We literally have no treatments, no prophylaxis, no vaccine, and no cure for this virus. If you have asthma, COPD, diabetes, pulmonary hypertension, or are immuno-compromised, this illness will hurt you.

The corona fear is spreading hard in The Netherlands. At my job people are cancelling their reservations and where we normally have a occupancy between 50 - 85% this period it is at whopping 25%. Tomorrow we don't even have reservations.
My manager asked me to make a list of all the cancellations that took place from february 1st until now and we are already over € 10.000 worth of room cancellations alone.
Events are now getting cancelled as well and people are asked to work from home. One event decided to continue the event and got backlash from loads of people about why they let this event happen. People are slowly getting crazier about it.
Edit: concerts are getting postponed all over the place now. I was suppose to see Knocked Loose this weekend but it's postponed. The Dutch show for Turnstile is also getting a new date but I'll be seeing them on sunday in Belgium and that show is still going on somehow.

This is already dominating my life. My Monday and Tuesday revolved around staff communications about the virus. Last night I stayed up late listening to the Joe Rogan podcast about it. Today I was meant to be going to a football match but it was called off after the opposition players came into contact with someone who was infected. So instead I'm at home watching another match on TV which is being played without a crowd because of the virus.
Wonder what tomorrow has in store.
This real time counter of confirmed cases and deaths is pretty mesmerising/scary:

NCAA's March Madness tournament will be played without fans, including every NCAA-sponsored playoff of every other sport.
The Ivy league cancelled all of their spring sports.
Coachella cancelled. E3 cancelled.
“The Late Show With Stephen Colbert,” “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,” “Late Night with Seth Meyers,” and “The Daily Show With Trevor Noah” will all tape without live in-studio audiences.

I know the virus sucks. Canceling everything isn’t fun. I’ve been through it since end of January. Now is a great time to find some new indoors plans to carry out. During the middle period of this virus for us in China, the tv news broadcasts sometimes showed what some families were doing at home to keep themselves busy and active. Many people started healthy exercise routines while others started building projects and made some fun items for their homes. Now is a good time to find some alternative plans for your indoors time. Over here, the numbers are finally going down and down. Jiangsu Province, which holds Kunshan, the city I work in, has been now declared a minimal risk province, and I will likely be starting work again in a couple weeks. Maybe a little more than two weeks to give other foreign teachers a chance to get their flights to return to China, as it is still difficult with airline limitations. What was pretty surprising to me was seeing Chinese President Xi Jinping going to Wuhan the other day. He is there, wearing mask and all, to speak with and cheer up the patients and workers in Wuhan. People can criticize and point out potential falseness in Chinese media, but the film doesn’t lie, and I saw a lot of footage of him speaking with many in the hospitals in Wuhan. It’s inspiring to see how much he cared, that he would dare enter such a place. Lastly, just remember guys. You may not be so endangered based on your age or your current health, but many others are not so safe, and any of us can be a vehicle to spread this. Please be careful, everyone. Be safe, and let’s do our best to avoid spreading this, so that we can sooner gain control of it instead and see it to its end. Stay tough, marshers!

I ordered a pull up bar and a hangboard yesterday evening that I expect to arrive by tomorrow. Now I can still train for climbing even without climbing, so I'm set.

I would like a similar set up at my place but I don’t really have a good situation for it right now. But that’s how we do when the virus comes to town! And useful after as well of course. Nice, buddy!
