I feel I'm going through another music phase. Lately I have tried to keep up with a lot of releases but I actually just want to listen to as many French Black Metal releases as I can, as there are just so many special ones. But the further I dig into it the more I notice that French Black Metal is connecting more intimately with Classical Music in so many ways than just about any other subgenre of Metal or even other styles of music that I can think of. And as I nerd out on the new Vehemence (France) album as well as the recent stuff by Les Chants de Nihil, Ascension, Pensees Nocturnes, and many more, I can't help but feel I am just edging closer to listening to straight classical music again. And it gets me thinking so much about my past as a violinist for many orchestras and now my present as an orchestra conductor in Shanghai and Kunshan. It's funny that I don't listen more to Classical music, because deep down it is super incredible music. Right now, I'm getting really excited just contemplating the music of Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring as I write up an assignment based around it for my 10th Grade Orchestra class. And I love that Les Chants de Nihil quoted that piece in their 2021 album. It was just super cool. Okay, I'm nerding out hard here, sorry guys. I'll shut up now. If anyone wants Classical music suggestions and would like to get familiar with any of the good stuff, I'm a great adviser.

The Rites of Spring is my favorite classical piece to listen to; I feel you though on one's musical predilections and circling back to something, whether it be a band or a genre. I get that quite often with circling back to something like classic rock/soul/R&B - it's a genre, along with classical, that I've grown up with since I was like 6-7; it's ingrained within me and it's something I wouldn't want to dismiss or discard.

Finally listening to Pantera, or at least the only five albums anyone cares about from them from 1990 to 2000. Pretty good! The first one is fine but I might not listen again. A little goofy and glam-ish. I never followed or sought out this band but I recognized like 7 or 8 tracks from the second record, which is really cool. I'll let you know about the rest tomorrow.

Enjoyed Far Beyond Driven a lot but it's a drop from Vulgar Display of Power. But I'd listen to those two any day again, they're both great.
Not very impressed by The Great Southern Trendkill. Slow and a little too twangy. They seem to be aiming for radio play and it does not work except for a couple songs.
One more tomorrow.

I got excited just now when I saw you were going through those albums. I went through them about 7 or so years ago, and actually I think that was around the time I was losing interesting in deathcore and metalcore. There is certainly a lot of hit and miss in those Pantera albums, but I definitely have a high sense of value placed on those. It's funny, some of their most popular songs are not my favorite ones. I simply found some songs that get a lot of play to be boring. Songs like "Walk." They're not really all that close to being my favorite band or anything, but what may be the most notable thing for me with Pantera is that the single most important music video (or in this case live performance video) of a band ever for me is the video of them playing "Domination" in Moscow. No other video, live nor music video, comes close to the value of that one. The energy and visuals of that incredible crowd, Phil was HOT, and Dimebag just tore that shit up. Dimebag really did have something incredible, an aura unlike any other guitarist of the time. His booze-filled veins still had incredible control and showmanship. Did you see this incredible video I speak of? I have viewed this video nearly a hundred times and I still get goosebumps from watching it every time. The 3 minute mark till end is legendary with the guitar solos and that fucking heavy breakdown at the end. It was just...AHHHH! So good! You gotta watch it! If you saw it already, you gotta watch it again! HAHA

If you saw it already, you gotta watch it again! HAHA Ha, I thought I might see your comment. Thanks. Yeah it's been fun, and years too late. I can see why they were such in influence on so many bands, and for some bands that didn't sound like them at first but gradually morphed that way. Throwdown, I'm looking in your direction. By the way, I liked their final record Reinventing the Steel quite a bit, more than I predicted. They didn't soften much at all then, but there are some tracks I'd skip over listening to it another time. That video is... fine? I definitely don't get why that's a big deal. Just a band playing. Not one of my favorite songs from them either. Good breakdown though. This video is better.

Man, 2022 seems to be the year that keeps on giving. Just saw a headline saying Deadguy and Pig Destroyer are working on a split together, with this being the first new material from Deadguy in 26 years. Bring it on.

19 years later and this EP is still an absolute crusher.
