Messi being forced to leave Barca feels like a modern day fable. Don’t live beyond your means and always be ready for a rainy day. Such a shame that his time with the club is ending like this, and that his talents are going to be wasted in the French league. Just wish he would’ve come to City.
I feel like City’s transfer business has been pretty slow. I’m happy we’ve signed Grealish but I think we need to get Kane in for this to be a successful summer. We can’t go another season without a top striker. Hoping that Martinez to Spurs means the transfer is happening.
Also looking forward to the season getting underway again. Our first home game is against Norwich in a couple of weeks. Looking forward to being back in the stadium after so long away.

I of course don't follow any of this, but should we feel badly for a player who makes the kind of salary that's like a small country's GDP? There was no way to restructure that to get him to stay?

Nobody is saying that they feel bad for him losing his salary, lmao. Not only is Messi the goat of football, his name is intertwined with Barcelona. Him having to leave because the club cannot afford him anymore is heartbreaking to see not only for Barca fans, but generally for football fans.

Why can't they afford him? Isn't that his choice to want to make that much money? Why can't his contract be reconsidered so he can stay?

Why can't his contract be reconsidered so he can stay? i read that its la liga rules that only 60-70% of your revenue can be used for player wages and barca were operating at 115% lol. so i guess if he played for free even they'd still be at like 90%.
someone with more knowledge prolly knows more however .

He'd agreed to a contract which reduced his salary by 50%, but even that wasn't enough to bring Barca within the wage to revenue regulations. There's some reports stating that Spanish employment law means Barca couldn't have offered him a contract below 50% of his previous one. The whole thing is confusing but I'm pretty confident that if Messi could've made it work then he would've done.

What a shit way to lose the best player in the world, who literally wants to take a 50% pay cut to stay. Crazy!
Is this the first time this has happened in football?

Yeah, that's a really fucked way to lose, like, one of the greatest of all time.

It's gonna be soooooooo weird seeing Messi in a PSG uniform. I'm not sure I have an American comparison to how weird that's going to be, the man has been with Barcelona since he was 13 years old.
It's going to be weirder than Favre in a Vikings uniform or Brady in a Bucs jersey.
