Nooooo. I love this. Why? i knew i would have to explain myself on this one haha. so let's start this off with a little story about what modern baseball means to me: i knew about mobo since sports came about in 2012 i think it was, but i never really listened to them until real friends announced a tour with mobo and you blew it in europe. that was in 2014, before they even had their 2nd album out. so, 2014 was a hard time in my life, it was my last year of middle school, my parents fought all the time, i hated the other people in my grade except for the few friends i had. so i have these memories of singing all these songs off sport together with my friends who were gonna come see them on tour with me in school. we had the last row of seats always and there we were just carelessly singing some mobo songs. then we went to the show, got to the venue early, saw band members, were too shy to talk to band members, etc etc. the show itself to this day is one of the best ones i've been to. a floorboard show, people were hanging from the pipes on the ceiling, some italian dudes who came around brought a pizza to the crowd and everyone was allowed to take one slice, a lot of singing along was going on, and all this kinda stuff. great show. well, then later that year their 2nd album came out. i liked it a lot, bought it on vinyl, listened nonstop. in march of 2015 - another tough year lol; i just started working in our local hospital for school and i came home crying every single day - i went to amsterdam with my sister (which was like an 8 hour drive from where i live) and - boo, surprise! mobo played there the exact day we arrived, together with into it. over it and tiny moving parts. i went to buy tickets - sold out. fml, i thought. but then i looked at the facebook event page and finally did manage to buy tickets off of someone who hardly spoke english lol. i forced my sister, who doesn't listen to this kind of music - or any kind of music that isn't brittney spears - to come along and she didn't really like it at first, but honestly i didn't care. at the venue i spoke to mobos drummer, he recently posted he'd lost his fish on instagram so i spoke out condolences and i think he actually appreciated it lol. the show itself was great again. so, after that, there were little news coming from mobo except for a 7" here and a 7" there which i all never really got into. i was still jamming sports and ygmia all the time, it's just such carelessly adolescent sounding music with lyrics i could relate to because i am a sad sack most of the time. soooo, no news for a while, until they announced holy ghost the first track they released, i didn't like. at all. second track, i didn't like. at all. third track, meh there's something catchy about it but not catchy enough for me. i just wasn't the modern baseball i knew. like don't get me wrong, it's all cool when bands explore new things and change, but for me that just didn't sound like modern baseball at all. there were no upbeat melodies, no careless lyrics, no anything. also, i didn't like the cover artwork. so i was totally bummed on the release, didn't even listen to the full album until a few days after release day. when i did the only song i grew to rellay like a lot was wedding singer and it still is. so then somewhen they released this documentary about the album where they stated that brendan was about to kill himself at one point, so that cleared things for me. i don't like that release because it's not mobo for me, because there were no "careless but kinda happy and kinda sad" moments in the process of writing that album for them, it was just sadness because one of their members tried to commit suicide. so while i very much appreciate how openly they discussed the topic and how honest they were, that sadly doesn't change my liking for the album itself. now that they're on hiatus, i can listen to slaughter beach dog and pretend it's old mobo but yeah, we'll see. hopefully they recover. tl;dr: doesn't sound like modern baseball to me and i can't get into it even though i appreciate their honesty with topics such as suicide or mental health in general.

Haha oooh shit I guess I kinda asked for such a lenghty explanation. You know I get it, if someone really is so heavy emotionally involved with a band, especially starting in their teens, forming this special link with a band and then a band brings out an album where they evolve from there old sound that you really loved...and I do see the change they went through. If I think back at my teens, I have these experiences, these feelings that are related with certain albums and now I know that is a special kind of love that you can develop with music/album/bands and I never really found again now that I'm older. Well I do hope that make sense!? ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/6734891/images/qtdKcGlMUqcdSykYUtay.png) But anyways I totally do understand why you put the album in this thread now, so all the typing was worth it, really appreciate the effort you put in your statement.

Maybe you can enlighten me as to why people enjoy the self titled so much. Outside of Minerva I think it's definitely the most paint-by-numbers Deftones record. Every album of theirs has a very distinct mood, feel and sense of place in time but I just can't find that record's. I hear you on the lack of cohesion in SNW, but that is what makes it feel distinct in their catalog. It seems like it perfectly captures a period of time defined by anxiety, apathy, insecurity, anger and confusion. It's like the record Suicide Silence was trying to make haha. Adrenaline is aggressive youth music. Around the Fur is the band experimenting and developing their sound, showing what their minds are capable of collectively. White Pony is the opus, the record that changed the direction of the band, the record they were born to make. Diamond Eyes is bright and optimistic, the band pulling themselves from shit and pulling together for Chi. Koi No Yokan is dark, passionate and turbulent as they come to grips with the fact that he is likely not coming back. Gore is mature and controlled, it carries a sense of acceptance and moving forward. To me, self-titled just sounds like the label wanted them to make a record after Pony, and the band decided to show their latino side a bit. HELP ME SEE THE LIGHT! Personally, and this is just me, I was never a fan of the self titled Deftones album when it came out, other than Minerva and Needles And Pins I couldn't really find the groove element in it at the time. Probably a decade later I came back to it and started giving it some listens and discovered that I liked it a lot more now than I ever did back then. I've been a pretty hardcore Deftones fan since I was like 16 years old, over 20 years now, and one thing I've discovered is that the band seem to be able to find new ways to create 'distinct moods' on each and every record. With the exception of Gore which I really couldn't get into at all, I think their entire back catalogue is good. When I say that I think SNW is their worst record it's still miles ahead of anything in their (albeit limited) genre of contemporaries. If you want to get really technical, I can rate their records in order of which I think the best are to the worst... 1. Around The Fur 2. White Pony 3. Diamond Eyes 4. Adrenaline 5. Koi No Yokan 6. Self Titled 7. Gore 8. Saturday Night Wrist I didn't include the B Sides & Rarities record, only because it's more of an extra material deal, as opposed to a cohesive record. I can definitely see where you're coming from on this and I respect it. My best friend prefers Around the Fur over the others as well. I think Around the Fur and Pony are the quintessential Deftones albums and where anyone who wanted to get into them or get what it's all about should start. My view is that their trajectory has been pretty similar to AFi's, they've been a band for so long at this point that they aren't really making records that resemble the sound or mood that they are most known for anymore. Like AFI, I think they are sort of just an artsy rock band at this point. While that may quite understandably alienate diehard fans of their earlier work, it does undeniably give them more freedom to grow and evolve with their sound which is why I still really look forward to records from both of those bands. You don't really know what you're gonna get and that's what keeps them challenging and exciting as a rock band.

People tend to forget how great and groundbreaking that band was.

Especially seeing them live once, and they sounded like utter shit.

Saw them only after their Ruination release, so the set only had Entombment of a Machine as an old song.

![](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/6/62/Gutterphenom.JPG/220px-Gutterphenom.JPG) Love ETID, absolutely hated this record. Gerard Way on guest vocals? Are you shitting me?! ![](https://f4.bcbits.com/img/a0692551697_16.jpg) First EP? Amazing. Second EP? Loved it. Debut album? What the fuck was this? ![](https://f4.bcbits.com/img/a1596630884_16.jpg) Another band who released EP after EP of brilliance, then the album dropped and I couldn't find a single track that I could remember five minutes after listening to it

Hahaha oh shit, that was the album that got me into ETID I think for me, having heard Last Night in Town, then Hot Damn, this was just a massive disappointment (at the time). Now it feels right at home with the rest of their discography.

Never heard of them before that release and songs like The New Black made it really easy for my 16 year old self to love that album immediately.
