It would probably be a decent movie if you never had exposure to deathnote before. unfortunately, not the case for me so I'm gonna say thumbs down

I liked it, bar the hamfisted acting. Dafoe's voice work was killer though.
I'd never seen the anime or read the manga before watching the Netflix adaptation. But, I've gone back and started watching the anime and honestly cheapened the Netflix film a bit.
Although, I will say that I don't think the film is bad when you just consider that it's adaptation and doesn't take every plot point. As an 'inspired by' release it does stand well.

p much only solid thing about this adaptation is Dafoe's voice work I'd say that they did a good enough job of not making the Ryuk costume/character look ridiculous in a "real world" adaptation. I was convinced that the character would pull me out of the movie everytime he was onscreen.

I was convinced that the character would pull me out of the movie everytime he was onscreen. That's true, which was often a problem with previous live-action adaptations of death note

i watched it twice. once before this youtube review by YMS and once after. and it didnt get better. i wish it was its own thing or a different story set in the death note universe. i feel like if it was like that it would be pretty alright. changing a few characters surnames and their personalities doesnt do it for me. on my first watch i thought it hinted at the fact that light turner wasnt the original kira in the news scenes and on my second watch i thought i heard the same thing. but that wasnt true at all or at least they didnt dive into that. that storyline would have been fine. L could have been better, apparently the actor who played him really tried to channel the character but smashing into a bowl of skittles or m&ms and shoving them into his mouth? i laughed so much. the only characters i liked were lights dad who seemed to be the only person that wanted to do good in the movie and watari. light wasnt the anti-hero he should have been and ryuk was poorly executed besides how great his voice seemed? whats with the apples? it didnt delve into why he likes apples or that he wants apples or that light went to the store to grab him some. where is the character development??? i mean the director hasnt really made any great? films. my only thought at the end was... who made this and why? its nowhere comparable to dragonball evolution though. haha also L using that weird plastic future gun because hes angry?????? pls explain. haha
for someone who hasnt seen or have any idea about death note, this movie is probably really cool. i can see this being an intro to people getting into the anime which i feel is pretty neat. death note the anime is trending on netflix so i guess thats something.

Just started the show because the movie was so... meh.
The show is certainly better even after just 4 episodes (so like the length of the movie!). It highlights how much the filmmakers missed the mark.

Unwatchable. I'm too much of a fan of the manga/anime.

honestly i don't know if is worth to try it It is, if you are wanting to see more of the Death Note Franchise. Sometime last year, back when I was checking out some Anime Live-Action that only Exclusive to Netflix, such as Bleach, FMA, and now(was) this. It finally got me resuming back to the Death Note Anime after. Of course the universe is different, the name, excluding Light last name, his dad, and his girlfriend name. Haha.. the green goblin became darker when it comes to creature like this.
