These guys label themselves as “Progressive death metal” and their debut comes out on the 29th; I thought this was catchy.

Finally found another death metal release from 2019 to get into. Not many from this year for me yet, but I’ve got another one I’ll post about a little later.
VLTIMAS: Big release here. VLTIMAS are a supergroup trio of David Vincent (classic vocalist of Morbid Angel), Flo Mounier (that amazing drummer from Cryptopsy), and Rune Eriksen (Ex-guitarist of Mayhem as well as members of a slew of other relevant bands). Instead of highlighting all of the things I love about this band/release like I usually do, I’m going to point out something I saw on Banger Reviews, as the owner of the youtube group did a review of this album. He suggested that David Vincent may be the GREATEST EXTREME METAL VOCALIST OF ALL TIME. That is a huge statement to make in a review. David Vincent’s career is a huge mixed bag, but I have spent a bit of time since seeing that review just trying to understand why he said that from this album alone, and honestly, I totally get why he said that. He does not have an impressively large range of vocals on this record, but there are definitely unique nuances in his approach, like how he stretches out ending syllables of words with a prolonged growl. Why I think he is an incredibly effective vocalist, however, and also why I think this record is amazing, is that David Vincent does death metal vocals with incredible clarity. You don’t need a lyrics sheet in front of you to catch lyrics. This adds so much heaviness and effectiveness to the record, and is why this is one of the best releases of the year for me so far. David Vincent is a badass. I will not claim him the greatest ever in extreme metal as I don’t feel qualified to make such a bold claim, but it is certainly a reasonable claim to make.

How come death metal bands always get annoying and try and change shit. Everyone should just be like Bolt Thrower and play simple death metal with sick riffs

Everyone should just be like Bolt Thrower and play simple death metal with sick riffs Lol that is where I was about three years ago in my death metal preferences. Turned out to be a phase. I prefer old school death, Bolt Thrower being a definite highlight, but sometimes I hear something fresh and it can be awesome. This year has not been a great year for death metal yet when compared to last year.

Obscure Infinity: This is probably my favorite death metal release so far in 2019. It has a lot to offer, as it is certainly in part another band throwing in some old school death metal influence, but they also have their own agenda and push things a bit more in a melodic direction quite often. The soloing on this album is fantastic. I’m posting the last track of the album as I just love that guitar jam solo madness at the end. This is the longest, most progressive song on the album, and also most likely to give people the feels.

Now I hate everything prog or technical. Music is stupid anyway

Not a new discovery for me, but more of a re-discovery:
P.S. I loved the song The Long Road to the 4th Dimension by PsyOpus.

Inoculation: one quick revisit to this 2018 album was all I needed today to be reminded that 2019 is not a death metal year. Had I given this one more spins sooner, it would have likely been on my top 10 list. Combine the crushing chunkyness of Morbid Angel with the quickness of Deicide with uniquely chromatic riffs and masterful songwriting and you get this. It blows every death metal album I’ve heard this year out of the water.
