The Sexy Brutale
The Sexy Brutale was a game I heard extremely high praise from influencers that I tend to trust. The way it was sold in the elevator pitch is that you must go around and save the people in this mansion from dying. Every person has their own untimely fate to prevent and you're the only thing that can stop it. The game breaks into a Groundhog Day type scneario where you keep reliving Saturday from 12 PM to 12 AM. You end up getting a real sense of the mansion as all the guest's patterns and motives get laid out clearly. The game breaks down into a sequence of discovering all the rooms in a specific area, identifying the victim and the killer, and then watching it all unfold. Listening and looking for clues to prevent the tragedy. I'll admit that the challenge wasn't nearly as ramped up as I suspected. I found myself, initially, underwhelmed by the solutions to the puzzles and the lack of care I had for any character dying or being saved. I forced myself to continue thinking that maybe the game would open up or maybe it would end up impressing me in some way and boy, am I glad I stuck with it.
In the end, The Sexy Brutale ends up being a charming game. Reliving the events over and over again gives you a sense of scale and wonder. When you finish the game every noise you hear exploring the mansion makes sense and you feel like you know all its secrets and details. After spending more time in the mansion the characters end up breathing life into themselves. Every single one is fleshed out and given more backstory that helps define their fate. Afrerawhile, the best part about the game ends up being the story. Initially it felt a bit confused and hectic but the more you think about it and the more time you put into arranging the pieces the more rewarding it feels. Tequila Works put a massive amount of time and love into the story and when you really take a step back to see the bigger picture it ends up being somewhat mindblowing. I'm constantly reminded of how gorgeous this imaginative mansion ends up being from the tiny details to the macabre deaths that lurk in every corner. My time with The Sexy Brutale has ended up being unforgettable and I would recommend anyone who has a spare 8 hours on hand to play it from start to finish reading every invitation, examing every room, and reading every bit of lore you unlock when collecting the playing cards. It may feel like a mobile game but what is lurking beneath its surface is something truly worthwhile.
It is currently on sale for another day on Xbox and Steam for $10, which is 50% off its base price of $20. If you're looking to buy it on PlayStation it also has a very easy Platinum trophy but they do not currently have it on sale. I played through the game on the Xbox One and found it to run very smoothly.
Additionally, if you do end up finishing it, I would recommend reading a Steam user's very well thought out examanation of the story and how it all ties together. steamcommunity.com/app/552590/discussions/0/135514402720983757/
