Funeral Mist: Holy shit. I really missed this album in 2018. Immortal really knocked the black metal scene on its ass this year, but this is way more fun and intense. One thing for sure, I can never doubt viggosaurus in his taste in black metal. Glad he shared his top albums list for 2018. I would have missed this gem for sure.

Havukruunu: This Finnish Black metal band may be the strongest black metal recommendation I’ll ever make. I have not been in a Black Metal mood since 2014 or 2015, but this 2017 album was easily my #2 favorite album of the year last year. Why this is a standout? Black metal is trendier than ever before, especially with many bands’ tendencies to borrow from post-metal territory, a trend which has turned me off from Black Metal. Havukruunu, however, bring the atmosphere too, but from the metal side of things. This band threw in lots of influences from Pagan, Folk, Viking Metal, and even some guitar stylings of the NWOBHM if you listen closely enough. I just now found out they made a 2018 album I somehow missed. Don’t sleep on this is you love epic black metal with gorgeous moments and expansive influences. Hidden gem.
This song is so epic. When 1:15 hits, it’s so badass. And again around 2:40. Just listen to it. Get immersed in this, and maybe play Skyrim while doing it because it’s the perfect soundtrack for Skyrim.

Well, this band has thrown nearly everything of the extreme side of things into the mix. I have to say, I’m not sure I’ve ever heard anything this decidedly dark before, and that’s really saying something for me. As for genre tags, their Bandcamp listed them as death metal, grindcore, sludge, noise, hardcore, and experimental. I think the song lengths and heavy atmosphere really evoke a black metal template. However, this is way too atmospheric and slow moving for my interest overall. I can only say it is impressive that they have unlocked a portal into the darkest depths of music. Generally, I’m not really into death metal bands who go for the most extreme lyrical themes such as miscarriages and morbid things involving infants/fetuses, and this band kinda turns me off with their album cover/band name/themes. But damn, listening to it...that’s impressively dark.

Wode: I’ve been enjoying this British black metal band for a little while recently. New find, and they have a unique distinguishing factor in that they have incorporated some NWOBHM into their sound, although it is barely noticeable in most tracks such as this one. I mostly appreciate black metal bands that have a sense of restraint from just blasting and tremolo riffing all the time. This band has a nice mix of everything. Well, give them a listen. I also highly recommend trying out the song “Trails of Smoke,” which has a very different mood in spots, a breath of fresh air.

I just found out about this record bc a friend posted it on FB and then I searched here - and of course metal- stringypoo knows it too :-D :-D. Very nice record, even though I'm usually almost exclusively listen to HC I think I'll spin this when I need a break.
