I remember when she won it and people were sniggering about that year, because The Hurt Locker won director and picture, beating out Avatar, which was directed by her ex, James Cameron And awww, shucks. 🙃 Looking back, it's mad that Avatar got nominated for best picture. I enjoyed the vibrant use of CGI as much as the next person but best picture? No. People were excited, because it was an environmentalist, sci-fi version of "Dances With Wolves", basically. Still thankful I never bothered to watch it.

Hey, Get Out is being specially released in some theatres this weekend because of the Oscar hype, and there's one about an hour's drive from me so i'm finally going to see it!
I also got my MoviePass card earlier this week so i plan on using it today, tomorrow, and Sunday. Going to knock out some other award contenders. I'm thinking Darkest Hour and The Shape of Water, mostly because i'm afraid those two might not be in theatres much longer.

A few more tibits about the films this year:
~Timothée Chalamet stars of course in Call Me by Your Name, but also makes an interesting and important appearance in a second bigtime nominee Lady Bird; you should see the movie to find out his role
~speaking of Lady Bird, Saoirse (it's pronounced "sur-sheh") Ronan is all of 23 years old and already has three Oscar nominations
~but she has a long way to go to catch The Queen, since Meryl Streep has 21 goddamn nominations
~however even the goddess herself can't catch composer John Williams, who has 51 - yes, seriously, 51 bloody nominations (new contest! would you believe someone has MORE than this? who could it be??? post below!)

Watched Mudbound last night since it got a few nominations. I didn't find the characters engaging and my interest in the plot ebbed and flowed. Not sure Mary J Blige deserved a nomination for best supporting actress. She barely features in it. The cinematography nomination was more deserving at least.

Wow, Phantom Thread was extraordinary. Going to see Darkest Hour this afternoon.

Has a 5 minute cameo and gets nominated for Best Supporting Actress

I only have two more Best Picture nominees to go see, Call Me by Your Name and The Shape of Water. Should be able to knock them out this weekend.
After that? I guess i'm willing to drive a little while to see other nominated films in theatres if they seem good. I'll look for All the Money in the World and I Tonya i think. Those might be the only ones left that are out in theatres right now, but i'll keep searching. It will annoy me to have to purchase someone on-demand but if it's particularly recommended, i will.

Going out this weekend to watch the other Best Picture contenders. By the way, everyone, please find TCM on your television this month, as they are broadcasting their annual 31 Days of Oscar run of only Oscar-winning films the entire month. Every day you will recognize a few titles, and you should be recording them to catch up on your film lore and be educated. However, for me what amounts the best day of the month every year is the one where they focus on best documentaries, and holy shit, they will be killing it this Monday, the 5th. Look at this list: 12:00 PM The Sea Around Us (1952) 1:15 PM On the Bowery (1957) 2:30 PM Robert Frost: A Lover's Quarrel with the World (1963) 3:45 PM Freedom on My Mind (1994) 5:45 PM Four Days In November (1964) 8:00 PM An Inconvenient Truth (2006) 9:45 PM The Times of Harvey Milk (1984) 11:30 PM Woodstock: The Director's Cut (1970) 3:30 AM Hearts and Minds (1974) Seriously, i could just watch this channel for about 18 hours that day. Their website - www.tcm.com/schedule/index.html?tz=est&sdate=2018-02-05 - has nice little write-ups about every film they air.

Phantom Thread was only released in the UK on Friday and I'm planning on seeing it today. I still have to wait another two weeks for the releases of Lady Bird and The Shape of Water. I dream of a world where cinema releases are simultaneous internationally. Darkest Hour was the latest nominee I went to see. I thought it was pretty average to be honest and exactly what I was expected from Joe Wright. Gary Oldham was very good as Churchill but I felt like a lot of the movie was just men with funny voices and/or speech impediments shouting at each other. The scene on the London Underground where Churchill met all the regular working folk had me cringing so badly. I think this type of 'epiphany' moment is something Joe Wright uses as a device in all his films, and this one just felt so fake and contrived while the rest of the movie felt more realistic and historically accurate. We don't get TCM in this country so I can't join in the documentary fest

The Shape of Water last night, Call Me by Your Name tonight (gotta drive a little over an hour to that one), then i'm good for all the Best Picture noms.
But my local mall is playing I, Tonya so might catch a quick Sunday matinee before the Super Bowl.

Denzel got the best actor nomination but it's had pretty shitty reviews. It's the only one in the main categories that I'm not sure I have time for. I saw Phantom Thread today. It's an incredibly well made movie. Unique, weird and looks amazing. Daniel Day Lewis is fantastic and the Jonny Greenwood soundtrack is perfect. For some reason I didn't connect with it in a way I was hoping to. It just wasn't much fun, more of an art house piece. 4/5 for me.

I guess i'll have to start looking for others on-demand the next couple weeks. But after today i think there won't be any more movies in the theatres around here that are up for Oscars that i haven't seen.

So i've been researching all the other films i haven't yet seen that may still be in theatres.
Honestly i think i'm out of luck, and i'll have to settle for on-demand now. Unless you know of any theatres within, i dunno, an hour's drive of Delaware that are showing stuff.
Here's what i've seen so far that has been nominated for anything: Call Me By Your Name Darkest Hour Dunkirk Get Out Lady Bird Phantom Thread The Post The Shape Of Water Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (that's all the Best Picture nominees, i was fortunate enough to get to see all of them) I, Tonya The Disaster Artist Molly's Game Blade Runner 2049 Star Wars: Episode VIII--The Last Jedi Abacus: Small Enough to Jail Last Man in Aleppo
As far as i know, there's only one movie left that i thought i had a prayer of catching at the cinema, and it was All the Money in the World. But i've searched and searched and i think it's just not out anymore.
I feel like there is a tiny chance i might find the acclaimed Chilean film A Fantastic Woman in some artsy theatre. I'm going to keep looking.
As you can see, i'm missing a bunch, so i'm going to start looking on-demand, and damn if it isn't going to cost me a few bucks... i'll watch every other one up for an acting award for sure, screenplays, and most other categories... i expect it to be about 6-8 more, and i'll see if i can get em. A little more than three weeks, here we go.
