I just got back from seeing Lady Bird this evening. I thought it was brilliant in the way it blended laugh-out-loud humour with right-in-the-feels moments. My friend who I went to see it with was in tears when the credits rolled because of how relatable the daughter's relationship with her mother was for her. Strong 4.5/5 for me.
I've seen all the Best Picture nominees now, so here's my rankings:
1. Three Billboards 2. Lady Bird 3. Call Me By Your Name 4. Dunkirk 5. Phantom Thread 6. The Shape of Water 7. The Post 8. Darkest Hour 9. Get Out
Probably a bit controversial putting Get Out in last place but I really didn't enjoy it.
Planning on watching I, Tonya and Roman J. Israel, Esq over the weekend, then I can rank the Best Actor and Actress nominees. The Best Supporting Actor category is going to be a challenge because All the Money in the World is gone from cinemas and I'm not desperate enough to watch a shitty cam or screener.

I may or may not be on the same page you... I’m really torn between Willem Defoe and Sam Rockwell (are the two you mean?). Rockwell’s character was so complex but Defoe’s had real heart and soul, and I think The Florida Project deserves recognition. Harrelson would be my third choice but I think his character was more straight forward than the other two.

My point was, the other nominees don't matter... it's a two-man race and those are indeed the two men.

I went to see I, Tonya tonight. I didn't know much about the story so it was pretty incredible to watch it all unfold. I thought Margot Robbie put in a really strong performance and definitely deserves to be up there with Frances McDormand and Saoirse Ronan for best actress. Allison Janney was excellent too and I can see her winning best supporting actress. 4/5 for the film.

First let me post the SNUBS for nominations, which aren't too many... but i do have some feelings.
Best Picture No joke, all the Best Picture nominations are good. Really. You should watch them all. But since the Academy can nominate 10 if they want to, i would have liked to see The Florida Project make the list. It was a beautiful and tragic film and a story that's really never been done before. Also, i know a film like Good Time would never make a Best Picture list, but it was just excellent. Even Logan, honestly, was tremendous.
Best Actress Aubrey Plaza is great in Ingrid Goes West. She has the chops, and in a crazy world she'd be a nominee. And i really like Jessica Chest--i mean Chastain. Vicky Krieps was astounding in Phantom Thread too. But really, no, these nominees are great. It wasn't Meryl Streep's best role, but it's freaking Meryl. She stays.
Best Actor Four of these are spot on and just right, and i love you Denzel but you didn't deserve the fifth slot here. I'm sorry. So who got snubbed? I'm not sure. But, again, Good Time was just so amazing that you need to have some love for Robert Pattinson. He was tremendous in that.
Best Supporting Actress I didn't see Mudbound, unfortunately, and to be honest this doesn't matter because the award is locked down already for someone else. Hlly Hunter, though, in The Big Sick is one of the biggest snubs of the year. I really thought she might have a chance.
Best Supporting Actor The top two are just so goddamn good that the rest don't matter. But is there a snub? Maybe. I thought Michael Stuhlbarg was just perfect in Call Me By Your Name. He doesn't have a big role, but gives this beautiful heartfelt monologue at the end of the film that brought the threatre i was in to tears. It was contagious. Shut up.
Best Adapted Screenplay These nominees are all really really deserving; none of them deserve to be taken off (my ignorance of Mudbound notwithstanding). I love that Logan is here too. If i could add one? Maybe Film Stars Don't Die in Liverpool. A sweet and moving story.
Best Original Screenplay This list, also, is basically impossible to argue with. All 5 of these films are excellent, and a couple are better than excellent. But just like i thought it deserved a Best Picture nomination, i would have been thrilled to see The Florida Project here. So well done.
Gonna start skipping around now.
Best Cinematography This film was forgotten by most awards, but Hostiles had breathtaking cinematography and was worthy of a nomination. Really. For that reason alone, see that movie. Ha, also, again, The Florida Project. Just brilliantly shot.
Best Documentary Feature I watch a ton of documentaries, as you may know. So, The Force was good enough to make this list. So was Unrest, quite unlike any movie i've seen - it did make the "shortlist," as they say. As did LA 92, the best of all the "25th anniversary of the LA riots" films that all came out like the same week - i think that was a great great picture and deserved more love.
Enough for today. In a day or two i'll be posting my predictions, which will also be what i wish would happen. So, gonna win and wanna win, if you will. See you then.

I watched Roman J Israel, Esq last night. It was an average film with a standard emotive Denzel Washington performance. Nothing to get excited abut at all. Disappointing effort from the director, Dan Gilroy, because his debut film Nightcrawler is one of my favourites from this decade. 3/5

Alright, predictions and feelings. Here we go. Let's do the dumb ones first and leave the best for last. I'm skipping the silly ones i have no idea about at all though.
Best Foreign Language Film WANNA WIN: Well, unfortunately i only saw one of these films, but it happened to be a great one, The Insult, from Lebanon. Let's go for that. GONNA WIN: Sweden's The Square won the Palme d'Or, but Chile's A Beautiful Woman is timely and really gotten a lot of press and great reviews. That's my pick.
Best Original Song WANNA WIN: "Remember Me" was a perfect song for Coco, and how the movie kept coming back to it, with the tearjearking finale just waiting for you, really made it stand out. GONNA WIN: The Sufjan Stevens track was good, and just right for Call Me by Your Name, but i see Coco's "Remember Me" taking this.
Best Original Score WANNA WIN: (Dude, anybody that saw Good Time had to be entranced by that score, reminiscent of Fight Club. Anyway.) I am SO pulling for a John Williams win here! The guy cannot have enough Oscars. GONNA WIN: I'm torn on this because i see The Shape of Water with a memorable score, but i just didn't think it was that good. Memorable, yeah. Dunkirk was magnificent too. But i'm going to go out on a limb and say Jonny Greenwood for Phantom Thread. You know that's the Radiohead guitarist right? Brilliant guy.
Sound and Effects and Production and Editing and Costume Stuff WANNA WIN: Look, i'm lumping these altogether because i don't even know the difference between sound editing and sound mixing, so whatever. Here's what i want to happen: Blade Runner 2049 and Dunkirk just take every award they're nominated for, split them evenly or something. And Darkest Hour needs to win the makeup ones because that fat-suit was tremendous. GONNA WIN: I see The Shape of Water taking a few of these probably. Phantom Thread makes sense to win for costumes. Dunkirk will win that editing award for sure, and honestly maybe both sound ones. The others, who knows.
Best Documentary Feature WANNA WIN: I wish i had seen these all but i do think i've seen the best of them. I contend that one of THE BEST films of the year, in any category, was Last Men in Aleppo, a movie so goddamn powerful i have not forgotten a moment of it since i watched it almost a year ago. It angers me that it's not sweeping every award it's up for. I don't know. I don't get it. GONNA WIN: I tried to read up on these, and it's just not clear, but it does seem like there's some momentum behind the anti-doping film Icarus, and it seems pretty timely too. So that's my pick.
Best Cinematography WANNA WIN: Dear lord, there is no question here. Blade Runner 2049 was so goddamn beautiful and mesmerizing. I'm so sorry for those of you who didn't see it on the big screen. But aside from the effects and design, the camerawork and scene transition was just amazing. Roger Deakins has 14 freaking nominations. FOURTEEN!! This needs to end. GONNA WIN: My research has honestly shown some momentum behind Mudbound, which would be a historic first. And of course, no one would be upset if Dunkirk won too. But you know what, i really think Deakins is gonna do it, Blade Runner all the way.
Best Animated Feature WANNA WIN: Please, it's Coco. GONNA WIN: Please, it's Coco.
Best Adapted Screenplay WANNA WIN: These nominees are all so great. I'm torn! But The Disaster Artist was just such a great hilarious story, and i love how the movie plays out that insane sequence of events. Plus, wouldn't it be great to see Tommy Wiseau at the Oscars? GONNA WIN: Call Me by Your Name i think is almost certainly going to win this. When in doubt, give it to the only nominee here who's also up for Best Picture.
Best Original Screenplay WANNA WIN: Again, these are all awesome. But i really really really want Get Out to win. It would be such a big deal and a rebuke to the traditional films that sometimes win awards like this. It's a taut, original, and groundbreaking script. It would be perfect. GONNA WIN: I think it's a coin toss, and i want Jordan Peele to win this so much, but my pick to win is Three Billboards, which is certainly deserving, simply because of all the awards it's won so far this year.
Best Director WANNA WIN: Again, i would love so much if Jordan Peele won this, but i'd be just as happy if Greta Gerwig won too! GONNA WIN: This is going to go to Guillermo del Toro for The Shape of Water. It may be the most locked-down big category of the night.
Best Supporting Actor WANNA WIN: I love the two frontrunners here, but my favorite is Willem Defoe from The Florida Project, who just played that character so REAL and so wonderfully tragic. GONNA WIN: There's a chance he might not, but it looks like Sam Rockwell will take this. It's deserved.
Best Supporting Actress WANNA WIN: Everyone else here is just coming to have fun at the party, but Allison Janney is gonna walk away with this and it's absolutely the right call. GONNA WIN: Yeah, Allison Janney is incredible. I, Tonya isn't a perfect film, but she is sensational.
Best Actor WANNA WIN: This may be futile, but i feel like there is a chance for the transcendent and legendary Daniel Day-Lewis to win this, maybe just to get him to that fourth Oscar. He was perfect in Phantom Thread. I'd also love to see the younger Timothée Chalamet win too. He has an incredible future ahead of him. GONNA WIN: In one of the least competitive races for Best Actor in a long time, this is pretty much a lock for Gary Oldman.
Best Actress WANNA WIN: This category was so good that it's missing like 3 or 4 other performances that deserved to be here (i'm lobbying for Actress and Actor categories to go to 8 or 10 nominees some day). I want Saorise Ronan to win this so badly. Can she? I think so. GONNA WIN: But i won't be unhappy when Frances McDormand will probably win this one.
Best Picture WANNA WIN: Okay here we go, while a lot of the big categories have had much more competitive races in past years, this is the year that Best Picture is wiiiiiide open. I read a great article on Deadline about how some insiders are seeing a surging Get Out possibly get some last minute votes. I read something else about Dunkirk sneaking in. Phantom Thread has no chance but god i loved it. I'm going to go with Three Billboards because i still remember just how i felt in the theatre after i finished watching it. What a great movie. GONNA WIN: Again, take what i said up there with a grain of salt. There are some mitigating factors here. There's an odd backlash against Three Billboards. There's that "preferential ballot" that really messes with the predictions in recent years. It's why you got sneaky wins from films like Spotlight and Birdman. But, with 13 total nominations, it's just really hard to bet against The Shape of Water. I didn't LOVE the movie like some others did, but i appreciated it and was in awe of it. It would definitely be a deserving winner.
