BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY Blade Runner 2049 Yes Roger Deakins!!! Finally, 14th time is the charm.
BEST ORIGINAL SCORE The Shape of Water, Alexander Desplat Disappointing. I didn't care for this score at all, honestly.
BEST ORIGINAL SONG "Remember Me" from Coco Definitely the best song, thank god that stupid one from the PT Barnum film didn't win.

BEST DIRECTOR Guillermo del Toro, The Shape of Water Not a surprise, and well deserved. Not my favorite but just what I expected.
BEST ACTOR Gary Oldman, Darkest Hour Not the best film by any means, and I know more woke people of my generation thought it was boring, but this is the right call. He was tremendous.
BEST ACTRESS Frances McDormand, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri I started typing this during the intro of the nominees, I was so sure of it. If she didn't take so many indie and weird roles she would have 10 Oscar nominations by now.
BEST PICTURE The Shape of Water Ha, that was great to see Fay and Warren get a second chance to present. Anyway, I predicted it and I get it but there are two or three others I'd have preferred.
Well there you go! Boy I called a lot of these, but most weren't difficult if you watched the films and followed the industry leads. Goodnight.

we had a contest at work to see how many people picked the winners and I have to say I got half of them right.
I'm really glad coco won for best song and animated. I really slept on it for a while but when I did end up watching it, oh man. life changer for sure. but I did get best director and pictures and actress wrong due to me not even seeing those movies. at least I have something to look forward to watching now. for some reason I thought shape of water was something else before I watched the trailer for it today.

for some reason I thought shape of water was something else before I watched the trailer for it today. Ha, yeah, it's something else alright! Isn't it funny that, this year, the "safe" film to win Best Picture (as opposed to the woke race movie or the woke rape movie or the woke poor people movie that didn't even get nominated for the award), is the movie about a deaf/mute woman fucking a fish/man/god after helping him/it escape from a science lab with the help of her closeted gay friend and black co-worker who really just wanted to know what his/its dick was like? Hollywood is crazy sometimes.

Finding it slightly amusing and cool that an actor who currently holds dual citizenship in the U.K. and US won an Academy Award for playing a famous statesman and politician who also held dual citizenship in the UK and US.

Still can't comprehend why The Shape of Water won Best Picture, and best Director.

Looks like I missed the boat with this thread but I honestly find the build up to the awards way more interesting than the actual awarding of the awards.. Mostly because I get a lot of good tips for films to watch. I don't actually like awards ceremonies, it's on too late to watch in the UK and the awards all seem to be easily predictable (as v9733xa demonstrated).
Still a few outstanding nominees for me to watch: - All the Money in the World - The Breadwinner - The Last Men in Aleppo - Loving Vincent - all the foreign language nominees
And then I can put this year's awards to bed.

Highly recommend The Breadwinner! Watched it that same night. Beautifully animated film and a tragic story/insight into life in Afghanistan. 4/5
