Feel like we may need a thread for this game. Would love to share my experience with any of you who also are playing it. I got it today. Probably won't really dig in for a few days due to my situation being that I'm moving soon, but yeah! Saw a great favorable review for it this morning:

I couldn't help myself in the end and already logged 30 hours in. Curious to see what main character you guys who are playing this choose. Since my main career has revolved around teaching, I decided to do what may be the road less taken and I selected Cyrus, the scholar. The thief seems like a popular character choice with reviewers and I typically choose warrior types, so I wanted to try something different. First impressions: +Music is outstanding +Visually appealing -30 minutes play and still haven't dove into any combat yet.
Well, that last bit is definitely a plus and a minus, since the opening is used to set up the storyline for the character, and I thought it was well done. If anyone wants to know the storyline I was introduced as a scholar, and my thoughts on the class so far, let me know.

When I import my demo data, I’ll be starting as H’annit, the hunter, and I’ll have Ophilia the cleric in my party.

I managed to get in an hour total yesterday and got into some battles at around the 34 minute mark. Wasn't totally impressed with my scholar's fighting ability, but I can see where he will be very useful quickly. I just wish he wasn't a staff user. Physical attacks don't hit hard and his magic points are not enough to carry him far before I need to replenish them by either using an item or leveling up. But the combat is wow. I really like it!

She is effective once you level her up a bit, but she’s not like a real heavy hitter. Figuring out when to use her SP attacks and also using chain attacks work the best.

Sounds about how I feel with the scholar at the moment. I'm currently trying to figure out the strategies about boosting since it didn't make complete sense to me, even though it's a simple mechanic to use and understanding when you can and can't use it. Mainly, I find myself trying to decide why or why not use two boosts in a turn. Doesn't seem to expend more SP or anything when I power up with a boost, but that mechanic doesn't make much sense to me if it doesn't expend some resource more. But that's what I like about the combat. It makes you think. At least for now. Haha

Currently going through her story opening. I found myself not caring about her storyline much and just wanting to battle more. Lol. But still, having an excellent time with this game overall.

Bought this over the weekend but have yet to pop it in. I can tell the hardest part for me is going to be picking who to start with. So happy to see the critical response the game is being given.

Just picked up Therion to add to my party. While I’m grinding his level up along with H’annit and Ophilia, who else should I go for to round my party out?

I'm still just Cyrus and Ophilia. Cyrus is basically an Ophilia type, only with fire, ice, and lightning spells. Looking at your current cast, he might be alright, and he's not far from Ophilia on the map. I'm also interested in getting the warrior in my crew.

I was thinking about it, and I might go for him or Tressa; I kind of need a mage as backup, and I need to balance this team with the other four when I get them.

It feels like I have put way more time into Octopath than I actually have. Only 5 hours in! If my wife wasn't around since I got the game, I probably would have played 15 hours by now. Lol! I just picked up H'annit to go with my Cyrus and Ophelia. I think I like H'annit quite a bit! I'm also noticing that with the battle mechanics and balancing, the more characters in my party, the larger number of enemies I face (usually same number as my party size), which tends to make battles last quite a bit longer. I'm used to just knowing how to quickly end battles, and this feels different. So I'm trying to figure out if there are any strategies in this game I can take to quickly end battles which don't involve draining your SP in just a few battles over and over.

If you stick to an area to grind, you should be able to figure out the enemy weaknesses pretty fast, and then formulate your game plan around that. What is the saying? Understanding your enemy is half the battle? You got this!

About 10 - 10:30 in to the game, and I’m enjoying it very much. Currently I decided to take a poke at Therion’s ch. 2 boss even though my entire party is roughly 6+ levels below the recommendation. Long story short, I lost, but I got a bit of a grasp as to what I need to do. Now I’m going to go grind a bit and level my characters up.

Understanding your enemy is half the battle? You got this! Oh for sure. Perhaps choosing the scholar is helpful in this because at the beginning of each battle he analyzes the enemies and reveals one weakness. Not a bad battle perk. I am a grindy rpg player, so I have no problem with sticking to an area for a while.
